The Maures Region has an abundance of unusual sites, such as,
the dozens of standing stones and dolmens dating back
to 2,000 BC, whose cultural and ritual significance are still
relatively unknown.
You will find them in the vicinity of Collobrières,
Plan de la Tour, Ramatuelle and Roquebrune-sur-Argens.
In the Middle Ages, at the time when this corner
of the Var was still called Pays de Freinet,
the inhabitants became accustomed to building
their dwellings on the hilltops so that they could
have an early warning of attacks from Barbarians
and Pirates coming from the sea. Later, the
fortified castles would strengthen these
constructions nestled in the hilltops.
Today, they are charming perched villages
offering picturesque panoramas over several
kilometres. There are also many remains of
water mills, wheat mills and oil mills. In Cogolin,
the Isle Mill was built in the 16th century, and since 1830 has
been driven by a steam engine. You can still see it in the Giscle area.
